OFFICE OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT & RETENTION SERVICES

ANDREA BARNETT, OLD MAIN 104 – 824-2299

All incoming freshmen are assigned an academic counselor from the Office of Academic Support & Retention Services.  Academic Support & Retention Services is the “go to” office for students at Mercyhurst College.  It is our goal to foster satisfying experiences that lead to student success and persistence.

Our belief is that successful students engage with the academic and social communities at Mercyhurst.  One key element in becoming engaged is learning how to navigate the College’s environment, that is, knowing who to see about what issue.  Academic Support counselors can help you with most issues you may encounter.  Your academic counselor can assist you with

·         concerns about your academic performance,

·         concerns regarding academic procedures and policies,

·         assistance to freshmen (or any student!) on navigating the college environment,

·         developing a plan of action for those students needing more structure,

·         assistance in finding and utilizing a peer tutor,

·         working with undeclared students in exploring interest areas to find a major,

·         working with you to understand the common and distribution core,

·         guidance with the change of major process.

THE CENTER FOR STUDENT EXCELLENCE

In order to provide students with a central location to further their education beyond the classroom, Mercyhurst College has established the Center for Student Excellence in the Hammermill Library.  The Center for Student Excellence is located on the main level of the library across from the Information Technology Helpdesk.  The Center is comprised of Peer Tutoring, the Writing Center, and the Mathematics Lab.

Tutoring Center

Justin Ross, 117 Egan Hall – 824-3605

Tutor Coordinator, Ms. Kathy Burns – 824-3122

Hammermill Library Room 200E

One-on-one and small group tutoring is offered in most subject areas. Tutoring is conducted by peer tutors—students who have demonstrated mastery of the subject matter and are recommended by the faculty. All students are encouraged to use this free service in pursuit of their academic success.  Students can request a tutor through the Academic Support page on my.Mercyhurst.edu.

Writing Center

Writing Center Director, Dr. Greg Brown – 824-3092

Hammermill Library Room 200D 824-2303

Writing tutors help students at any stage in the writing process, including

·    analyzing and understanding the assignment,

·    revising and editing a rough draft,

·    using correct citation styles:  MLA, APA, or Chicago style,

·    incorporating professor’s suggestions about draft.

Students may bring in projects such as college writing papers, research papers, or business letters.  To meet with a tutor, writers may sign up on the schedule affixed to the Writing Center door, where our usual hours are posted each term.  An appointment is for thirty minutes, and we have a printer to use for clients’ drafts.

Mathematics Lab

Math Lab Director, Mr. Jim Feeney – 824-3385

Hammermill Library Room 200A – 824-2078

The Math Lab provides the following services

·    assistance with mathematics course concepts,

·    participation in regularly scheduled study groups for specific courses,

·    resources for those students needing developmental mathematics help.

The Lab staff will work directly with individual mathematics professors to provide information and assistance to students enrolled in their courses. Available resources include: appropriate math software, text books, and math exercises.
