MERCYHURST AND THE NCAA
Since 1982, the Lakers have participated in the NCAA at various levels, from Division I to III. The NCAA was officially formed in 1906 and has grown to encompass 1,500 colleges and universities. The NCAA draws its members from a diverse group ranging from large state institutions to privately funded colleges. But all of its members are trying to reach a common goal – the advancement and achievement of the student-athlete and the common good of higher education.
ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY
The operative policy on athletic eligibility at Mercyhurst College is as follows:
· Athletes must have completed the necessary credit hours as determined by the NCAA.
· In general, athletes must have the minimum GPA required by the NCAA and by the College to remain in good standing. Athletes must have and maintain:
- A 1.8 QPA during their freshman year;
- A 1.9 QPA during their sophomore year;
- A 2.0 QPA during their junior and senior years.
A student who falls below the minimum QPA for any of the four academic levels at any of the reporting periods (fall, winter, and spring terms) becomes ineligible to compete until the average reaches the necessary minimum.
